“Renunciation”
Along the spiritual path we have tools or aids to help us make our way. Some of these inner resources may be readily accessible to us and others may seem more of a challenge. But with practice and steadfast devotion, we can recognize their significance. Renunciation or non-attachment (“vairagya”) is one such means of self-unfoldment.
“He who has removed from within himself all causes of self-limitation, who is free from the consciousness of duality, who has attained complete mastery over all his perceptive faculties, yet who is actively engaged in working for the welfare of all beings, such a man of wisdom and renunciation regains absolute freedom.”
Srimad-Bhagavad-Gita
Translated by Swami Premananda
”Renunciation or detachment is not so much a moral imperative or a guiding suggestion as it is a natural response to the reality of life. We should engage in selfless service, always with a spirit of detachment. This detachment is the replacing of matter consciousness with spiritual consciousness. It is not negation of the objects of the world but acceptance of them for their spiritual value. In such a state of renunciation we can do no harm. We have not given up action. We have not given up duty. We have only given up attachment to the results of our actions, and therefore, have focused on giving the truest part of ourselves.”

Gandhi’s Steadfast Yoga
”In the path of renunciation the stress is on the relinquishment of everything that stands in the way of one’s search for God.”
Swami Yogananda
