“Samskaras: Lasting Impressions”
Samskaras are finite thought impressions. When we direct our mind subjectively, we encounter these finite concepts and thoughts acquired from our sense-identified existence. These sensory impressions are a challenge to our meditation. They create veils that hide the vision of the Self. Our task is to free our mind from these samskaras of memories and desires, “to be still and know."
“When the mind can withdraw itself fully from the association of the senses and sense-activities, and can keep itself completely free from the intrusion of all sense-impressions, it becomes calm. At this state it reflects uninterruptedly the perfection of the Soul.”
The Law of Self-Manifestation (Karma Yoga)
Swami Premananda
“To become subjective and to learn to meditate, the mind requires guidance. It requires something to focus on that is at first so interesting and so absorbing—so drawing to the mind—that all lesser and weaker, self-limiting or selfish thoughts, will drop away. It requires a light or an illuminating thought. We can see from this why spiritual study and the understanding of one’s philosophy and ideal are vitally important.”
