The Art of Living: The Path and Ideal of Kriya

This year our seven-week Kriya Yoga Meditation Series will take place on Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. Our usual Sunday worship service will take a slightly different format to offer time to unfold the purpose, ideal and technique of Kriya. This Kriya series is dedicated to the rishi, Patanjali. Each week will reflect on themes from his Yoga Sutras as they pertain to Kriya Yoga. All who aspire to the life, practice and ideal of yoga are welcome.

The Yoga Sutras are well-known for the description of ashtanga yoga, eight elements of practice culminating in samadhi. The eight elements, known as limbs, are yama (abstinences), niyama (observances), asana (seat or posture), pranayama (focus on breath), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration of the mind), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (realization of absolute oneness).
We will explore the profound mystical source of Yoga according to our sacred spiritual heritage and inspired by themes from the Yoga Sutras.

“Patanjali is an indisputable authority on yoga and his Yoga Sutras unquestionably embody the most complete and authentic teaching on raja yoga. The rishi Patanjali was an Absolute Monist. He was indeed a spritual yogi of the highest order. It is self evident that his yoga experiences were varied and yet complete. Nevertheless he made it abundantly clear that the supreme goal of yoga is the attainment of absolute oneness.”

“In popular terms ‘yoga sutras’ and ‘raja yoga’ are almost synonymous. The entire book of yoga sutras is divided into four chapters. They are Samadhi, Sadhan, Bibhauti, and Kaivalya, respectively signifying realization, meditation, powers and liberation in cosmic oneness. It is astonishing that this great yogi so masterfully and with utmost clarity expounded all the fundamental principles, practice, powers and the purpose of yoga in 195 concise sentences.”
