“Preparing to Meditate”
Kriya Brochure

We began our Kriya series inspired by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras focusing on the first two of the eight limbs of yoga: Yama (restraints) and Niyama (observances), and steadfastly living by our ideal. We now move to the third of the eight limbs, known as asana (seat or posture). Patanjali presents only three sutras on this aspect of yoga out of the 195 that comprise his Yoga Sutras. Yet, we may look to the sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita for further illumination.

“In meditation one is not conscious of physicality at all — of the qualities of weight or dimension. One is no longer connected with earth consciousness, but rather has risen above the material world.”

“The center Muladhar corresponds to the coccyx plexus at the base of the spine. “Mul” means root. “Adhar” simply means place. Muladhar is the root or beginning center of our human consciousness. In the symbol for Muladhar you see the cosmic cross: a square, its center extended to four equal sides and four petals. The four-sided figure represents the extent of the universe, the ‘four corners of Brahma,’ the Creator, and his total and complete universe of creation. At Muladhar consciousness begins to ascend with the awareness of the indwelling presence of God in the earth plane and throughout the entire universe of God.”

“In a clean and pure place, having prepared a firm seat, neither too high nor too low, covered first with Kusha grass, then a skin of tiger or deer, and finally a piece of silk or woolen cloth; There seated upright and motionless, with sense-faculties and cognitive powers under perfect control, and with mind one-pointed, let him practice Yoga for his subjective self-purification.”
