“Music of the Spheres”

Pythagoras discovered the workings of musical pitch by way of vibration. He later reasoned that because objects produce sound when in motion, planets moving in orbit should also produce sound. Given that their relative distances were concordant with musical intervals, Pythagoras surmised that the resulting sound must be a harmony—a “music of the spheres”—but because it was continually sounding, we had no point of comparison. We had no real sense of silence or difference and, therefore, we could not distinguish it from our known idea of silence. Johannes Kepler maintained this metaphor when he said: ”The heavenly motions are nothing but a continuous song for several voices (perceived by the intellect, not by the ear).”

Humanity has come to the know the best use of vibration is spiritual evolution. In the Vedas, the sound of the abstract is anahad, meaning unstruck sound. The sufis named it sarmad, suggesting freedom of soul from earthly bondage. Those who are able to hear it are freed from the captivity of the senses and the physical body. Spiritual vibration awakens and uplifts the mind.

“Listen! We hear thy Word: AUM.
In the music of the spheres
in the psalm of David,
in the pharaoh’s hymn,
in the sloka of the Vedantist,
in the bhajan of the worshipful,
in the mantra of yogis.
The muses know thy name, because Thou art
the invocation and the benediction of all.”

”Music is the eternal symphony of God revealed in the soul of man as in all creation. Thy mystic harmony permeates my being and I feel my spiritual oneness with all objects and beings in thy cosmic creation in the rhythm of the universe.”
